Elsita's secret garden

It all started last winter- remember?

She sat waiting for a long time- this new sculpture with the unfamiliar structured shape. I didn't know what to do with her. I really wanted the shape to dictate the result.

I tried this. Sure...it could be done. But was it too "Alice-ie" in time when Alice had just been released upon us and everyone was crazy in love? By the way- just saw it for the first time and I, too, heart Alice.

So "Off with her head!" Or "Off with the birdcage! By the way, I wasn't kidding- I can't find it-its not ever shown up again...

Then this came about and I was off and running. So I thought. There's been a lot of stops and starts along this path.

But, finally, here she is. She's formally named-
Elsita's secret garden

Elsita is a name I came across while blog hopping. I can't find it since then but it was a South American doll artist. Perhaps Venezuela? I thought this lady looked like a south American beauty and so I borrow the name.

Elsita is by far the most 'decorative' of the sculptures I've done. The wire I wrapped around her undulates in contrast with her linear shape. It flows and travels a path around her. It ends (Or does it begin?)with a key. The colors are meant to be vivid, triumphant but mysterious. I hope the whole piece conveys a sense of mysteriousness and secrets.

Every garden should have butterflies and roses. If you look closely at the picture above you can see a trail of tiny butterflies.

By the way- I teased you about the captured spaces and the enamel based paint I used within them. Well, its nail polish. Pearl, turquoise, burgundy and red. Just wanted to give it a try.

The flower inside is an old fashioned wild rose- not the kind we see today in the florist shops. Its made from paper clay. I shaped each petal and leaf and then used wire to assemble the whole flower. The butterflies I found in the jewelry supplies dept at Michaels. Of course, I added nail polish to 'bring the outside in' as it were.

There are plenty of things I would do differently if I were to create a sister for her. I never will. Off to the next thing. I learned a lot on this project and can't help but wonder if its knowledge I will ever put to use as each project seems to take on a life of its own.

Anyhow- what do you think? If anyone knows of this Elsita who blogs let me know, I'd like to let her know I borrowed her name and see what she thinks of my Elsita:)

A Little Summer Fun Followed By A Little Summer Anxiety!

Yep.  Got a  little goin' on... First off-  Anything to keep these two busy!    Very first overnight camp- thought I'd be really anxious.  Turns out- not so much! A few family reunions   with a few too many pictures taken.... A little surf and sand and a husband who says "Back up...I'll get the bay in the background."   Hmmm ... looks like we're in the background and those flip flops are are pretty much the focal point of this picture.  No wonder I'm always behind the lens! Did I mention- ANYTHING TO KEEP THESE TWO BUSY???? There's been some art.... And then there's this lady.  This is the final on her face- because if I don't get this done.... Their gonna lock me away in the funny house! Oh yeah, because I just don't have enough going on.... Remember this?  The birdcage never quite made it on this lady's head but.....I did not throw it out.  Actually I lost it and finally found it under the treadmill when I

Paper Mache` vs. Creative Paper Clay vs. Paper Clay Recipe!

For those of you who work in figurative sculpture, or are art doll makers, or just like to putz around in an artsy way this post is for you. If you don't fit into the categories above this post may just be a yawn. Sorry. The following is a comparison of my experiences using three different products. Paper mache`, Creative Paper Clay, and paper clay recipe. This picture is a good example of how I like to mix up my mediums. The round flower is Creative Paper Clay. The 3-petal blossom is made from the paper clay recipe found on line. Both of these flowers adhered quite well with out any glue to the paper mache` background. In my Cloth and Clay group I have a discussion going about a paper clay recipe vs. purchasing the manufactured paper clay. I wanted an alternative to the little bricks and my dependency on whether or not my local hobby stores would have it in stock or not. And, truthfully, at the time with a rather large sculpture in mind I knew I would eat through those

Craft Tutorial Alert!

Well, its the end of the school year.  Time to thank the two ladies that influenced my children in a great direction!  I didn't want to donate to the gift card.  Why?  Because I'm not a joiner?  Because I want to stand out rather than share the spotlight?  Because I want a personalized gift that they can keep and always remember?  Because I want to impress upon them that I can't participate as a classroom volunteer because (loud children scare me) I've been so busy working and being creative?  Because I want to do both gifts for very little money but not look cheap?  Bingo. I saw an ornament made from a puzzle piece in a magazine and it stuck with me.  'I should do something like that' I always think.  Then the idea came to me and unfortunately would not leave me- like ringworm.  I would make a mobile. I found the very largest puzzle I could find at my local store.  Turns out the fewer the pieces- the larger they tend to be.  This 4.00 puzzle had
